چکیده

We use ultraviolet spectra of Capella from the Hubble Space Telescope and Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer satellites to study interstellar absorption lines from the Local Interstellar Cloud (LIC). Measurements of these lines are used to empirically determine the ionization states of carbon, nitrogen, and silicon in the LIC, for comparison with the predictions of theoretical photoionization models. We find that the observed ionization states are consistent with previously published photoionization predictions. Total abundances are determined for the elements mentioned above, and others, for comparison with solar abundances. Magnesium, aluminum, silicon, and iron are all depleted by at least a factor of 10 toward Capella. The abundances of carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen are essentially solar, although the error bars are large enough to also allow depletions of about a factor of 2 for these elements. A Method for Deriving Accurate Gas-Phase Abundances for the Multiphase Interstellar Galactic Halo

We describe a new method for accurately determining total gas-phase abundances for the Galactic halo interstellar medium with minimal ionization uncertainties. For sight lines toward globular clusters containing both ultraviolet-bright stars and radio pulsars, it is possible to measure column densities of H I and several ionization states of selected metals using ultraviolet absorption line mea...

The Homogeneity of Interstellar Krypton in the Galactic Disk

We present an analysis of high resolution HST Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) observations of Kr I λ1236 absorption in seven sight lines that probe a variety of interstellar environments. In combination with krypton and hydrogen column densities derived from current and archival STIS and FarUltraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer data, the number of sight lines with reliable Kr/H ISM abu...

Deuterium Abundance toward Wd2211−495 : Results from the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (fuse) Mission

We present a deuterium abundance analysis of the line of sight toward the white dwarf WD2211−495 observed with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE). Numerous interstellar lines are detected on the continuum of the stellar spectrum. A thorough analysis was performed through the simultaneous fit of interstellar absorption lines detected in the four FUSE channels of multiple observati...

Local interstellar cloud electron density from magnesium and sodium ionization: a comparison

The ambient interstellar plasma density (i.e. the plasma density of the interstellar medium surrounding the Sun) directly governs the structure and the size of our heliosphere. Information on this density can be derived from the ionization states of the interstellar species which can be detected in absorption along the paths to the nearby stars, and which can be shown to belong to the Local Int...
